Who was Buddha?
Buddha means 'awakened one'. Buddha was a simple monk who began his life as a Prince, with all the privileges and comforts of worldly life.
Although Prince Siddhartha's father tried very hard to shield the young Prince from worldly concerns and sufferings, it wasn't long before the Prince who was to become known as Buddha became aware of the sufferings of aging, sickness and death, in spite of his father's best efforts.
This awareness of unavoidable sufferings led Prince Siddhartha to leave the palace life and take up a life of a meditation and inner investigation into the nature of happiness and suffering.
Whilst sitting under the now famous Bodhi tree, Buddha attained the fully awaken state of a Buddha, and over 45 years gave over 85,000 teachings to help others overcome every type of suffering and come to know the freedom of permanent inner peace.
Buddha's teachings have been passed down from teacher to student/disciple in an unbroken lineage of scripture and realisation.
