Protection from Fear: Becoming your own protector through the practice of going for refuge
with Buddhist Teacher Elizabeth Muzyka

We have so many fears: loneliness, poverty, sickness, rejection, failure, death, mental disease, the future of this world and our children …. What do we turn to protect us from fear and anxiety, especially these days? What can we rely upon? What is actually trustworthy?

This course explains the Buddhist practice of going for refuge. In the first part of the course we will learn to face our fears and transform them, primarily by learning how the source of all fear lies within our own minds, in particular in our misapprehensions of reality. In the second part of the course, we will explore the Buddhist objects of refuge known as the Three Jewels, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Through understanding how to rely on them we develop an inner trust and confidence in our own ability to transform our difficulties and fears. In this way our lives and relationships become paths leading towards the joyful, fearless and compassionate state of enlightenment. We not only become our own protectors, but we also learn to become protectors of others.  Everyone welcome.

The classes begin with a guided simple breathing and relaxing meditation. Then, a talk is given by the teacher on the subject for the week, always very practical methods for overcoming minds like impatience, our stress, or anxieties. After this, the teacher leads another meditation, to help familiarize our mind with the  subject topic. These classes are self contained, so you can attend any class you chose. However, you may receive more benefit from attending the whole course and so gain a fuller understanding of the subject.

You do not need to wear special clothes to meditate, and during the classes we sit on chairs or cushions.

Elizabeth Muzyka

Our popular Sunday morning class are taught by Elizabeth Muzyka. Elizabeth has been studying and practicing Kadampa Buddhism for more than 6 years and is a senior student on the Teacher Training Program at Chakrasambara Buddhist Center.

Born in Queens and residing on Long Island for many years, Elizabeth is a mother and a nurse. She teaches with great warmth and skill and is able to explain from her own experience how to integrate Buddha's teachings into our daily lives.
